Working with the interface

Most views in the platform are built from the same components. This chapter describes those components once, so that the later chapters can concentrate on the content of each view.

Element Location Purpose
Projects Centre of the header Opens the projects overview.
Search Jobs Centre of the header Opens the list of scan jobs.
Account menu Right of the header Opens Preferences, Companies, Help & Resources, Administrator settings, Legal Notice, and Logout.
Alpha Strike logo Left of the header Returns to the start page.

Administrator settings is only shown to users with Admin permissions. Help & Resources is shown when at least one help destination has been enabled for the deployment. It opens a dialogue containing the configured getting-started guides and links such as the documentation, FAQ, release notes, and API reference; each destination opens in a new browser tab.

Tables

Nearly every result list is a table with the same controls.

Control Location Purpose
Results: n Above the table, left The number of rows matching the current filter. Where rows are selectable, the count is shown as n of m selected.
Column filter Filter symbol in the column header Restricts the table to selected values of that column.
Export Icon above the table, right Downloads the current table as JSON or CSV.
Manage columns Icon above the table, right Shows or hides individual columns. Reset restores the default selection.
Filter Icon above the table, right Opens Filter settings for a free-text Boolean expression. See below.
Rows per page Below the table Switches between 10, 25, 50, and 100 rows.
Page numbers Below the table Navigates between pages.

Filtering a single column

  1. Select the filter symbol in the header of the column.
  2. Optionally type into Filter column to narrow the list of available values.
  3. Activate the values you wish to keep, or select Select all.
  4. Select Apply.

Show selected reduces the list to the values you have already activated, which is useful when a column offers many values.

Sorting

Select a column heading to sort by that column. Selecting it again reverses the direction. An arrow next to the heading indicates the active sort column and direction.

Filter settings and filter syntax

The Filter control accepts a Boolean expression that is applied across the table. This is the most precise way to narrow a large result set.

Element Notation Example
Conjunction && Protocol:"http" && Port:"443"
Disjunction || Name:"project name 1" || Name:"project name 2"
Negation ! !Protocol:"http"
Grouping ( ) Project Manager:"projectManager" && (Name:"project name 1" || Name:"project name 2")
Field comparison key:value Name:"project name"

Prefix a quoted value with r to interpret it as a regular expression. Without this prefix, characters such as ^, $, and + are treated as part of an ordinary filter value rather than as regular-expression operators.

Intention Expression
Exact match on projectName Name:r"^projectName$"
Values beginning with projectName Name:r"^projectName"
Values ending with projectName Name:r"projectName$"

Select the information symbol next to Filter settings to display this reference inside the application. Select Apply to apply the expression, or Cancel to discard it.

Selecting rows and bulk actions

Where a table supports selection, each row carries a checkbox and the header carries a select-all checkbox.

  1. Activate the checkbox of every row you wish to process.
  2. An action bar appears above the table, on the right.
  3. Select the required action. The number of affected rows is shown in the tooltip of each action, for example Add selected to project (3).

We recommend using bulk actions only where the selected rows have been assessed individually beforehand.

Two-step dialogues

Dialogues that write entries into a project scope follow a common two-step sequence:

Step Title Content
Step 1 of 2 General The values to be added, entered manually or imported from a file, together with any options.
Step 2 of 2 Scope options A review table listing each entry with its detected Type and its Search scope, where entries can still be amended or removed.

If entries are marked as errors in Step 1, Continue remains disabled until those entries have been corrected or removed. In Step 2, entries that cannot be added are marked in red, and the confirming button remains inactive until every affected entry has been corrected or removed. Back returns to Step 1 with entries removed in Step 2 already omitted.

This sequence applies to the Creating a new project guide, to the Add search terms guide, and to promoting findings from Discovery.

Resource limits

Dialogues that consume plan quota provide a resource limits control in the dialogue header. It reports the current consumption against the plan for each category:

  • Keywords
  • IPv4 and IPv6 addresses
  • Domains
  • Darknet records
  • Employee lookups

We recommend checking these figures before defining a large number of search terms. The same figures are available per company on the Plans tab of Companies.
